Your Sun, Moon and Rising signs are the three placements most astrologers read first. The Sun sign describes your core direction, the Moon sign your emotional needs, and the Rising sign (Ascendant) the way you meet the world.
Together they give a fuller picture than your Sun sign alone — two people with the same Sun sign can have very different Moon and Rising signs.
The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours and the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days. An accurate birth time, ideally from a birth certificate, gives the most reliable result.

Your Rising sign cannot be found without a birth time, so we say so instead of guessing. If you know roughly when you were born, choose “Approximate” to see every Rising sign that is possible within an hour either side.
Zodiac date ranges are averages. The Sun enters each sign at a slightly different moment every year, so for birthdays at the start or end of a range the only reliable answer is the Sun’s actual position at your birth — which is what this calculator uses.
The most common reasons are a different zodiac (Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used here), a wrong time zone or daylight saving offset for the birthplace, or a birth time that is not quite right. We use the tropical zodiac and the historical time zone rules of your birthplace.
