A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it appears to move backwards through the zodiac. Nothing changes in its real orbit: the effect comes from Earth overtaking an outer planet, or an inner planet (Mercury, Venus) overtaking Earth. Every planet except the Sun and the Moon goes retrograde regularly.
Three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time. In 2026 Mercury is retrograde from 26 February to 20 March, 29 June to 23 July and 24 October to 13 November (UTC).
The shadow is the stretch of the zodiac Mercury crosses three times. The pre-shadow starts when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; the post-shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde. This page lists both dates for every Mercury retrograde.
The slow outer planets. Jupiter is retrograde about four months a year, Saturn about four and a half, and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto about five. Venus and Mars are retrograde least often: Venus for about six weeks every 19 months, Mars for about two and a half months every 26 months.
