The eight Moon phases and what they mean
New Moon
The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun and cannot be seen. In astrology: beginnings, a clean slate.
Waxing Crescent
A thin crescent in the evening sky, growing each night. In astrology: intention, gathering energy.
First Quarter
Half of the Moon is lit, on the right as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. In astrology: decisions and action.
Waxing Gibbous
More than half lit and still growing. In astrology: refining, patience before the result.
Full Moon
The whole face is lit, opposite the Sun. In astrology: culmination, visibility, strong feelings.
Waning Gibbous
Still mostly lit, shrinking; rises after dark. In astrology: sharing what you have learned.
Last Quarter

Waning Crescent

How do I find the Moon phase on my birthday?
Enter your date of birth above. The calculator shows the phase, the share of the Moon that was lit and the Moon’s zodiac sign that day. Add your birth time for the exact phase at that moment.
Does the time of birth matter?
A little. The Moon moves about 12° relative to the Sun each day, so the illumination changes within the day, and near the edge of a phase (the calculator uses eight equal 45° phases) or on a day the Moon changes sign, the time decides which one applies. Without a time the calculator uses 12:00.
What are the eight Moon phases?
New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. The cycle takes about 29.5 days.
Is my birth Moon phase the same as my Moon sign?
No. The phase describes the angle between the Sun and Moon; the Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in. For your Moon sign from your birth place and time, use the Moon Sign Calculator.
