How the calculator works
Lunar new year (the usual rule)
We compare your birth date with the date of Chinese New Year in China time. Before it, you belong to the previous Chinese year. This is the rule used by most Chinese calendars and zodiac charts.
Lichun (the solar rule)
Four Pillars (BaZi) astrology starts the year at Lichun, the moment the Sun reaches 315° of longitude, on 3, 4 or 5 February. If that gives a different animal, the result says so. On Lichun day itself the birth time and time zone decide.
Element and yin-yang
They come from the Heavenly Stem of the Chinese year: the last digit of the year gives the element (4–5 Wood, 6–7 Fire, 8–9 Earth, 0–1 Metal, 2–3 Water); even is yang, odd is yin.

What is my Chinese zodiac sign?
It is the animal of the Chinese year you were born in. Chinese years start at Chinese New Year, between 21 January and 20 February, so if you were born in January or early February your animal is usually the one of the previous Gregorian year. Enter your birth date above to get the exact answer.
I was born in January or February — which animal am I?
Check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year. If you were born before it, your animal is the one of the previous year. For example, Chinese New Year 2026 fell on 17 February, so someone born on 10 February 2026 is a Snake, not a Horse.
Does the Chinese zodiac start at Chinese New Year or at Lichun?
Most calendars and zodiac tables change the animal at Chinese New Year (the lunar new year). Some astrologers, especially in the Four Pillars (BaZi) tradition, change it at Lichun, the Start of Spring, on 3, 4 or 5 February. The calculator shows both when they differ.
Do I need my birth time?
Only if you were born around Lichun (3–5 February) and follow the solar reckoning: the time, with the time zone of your birthplace, decides whether you were born before or after the Sun reached the Start of Spring. For the usual lunar-year animal the date is enough.
