This guide explains why, and how to find which sign the Sun was actually in when you were born.
Why the dates move every year
The Sun takes about 365.24 days to return to the same point of the zodiac, while a calendar year has 365 or 366 days. So each sign change arrives about six hours later every year, until a leap day pulls it back by a day.
Between 1950 and 2050 the Sun entered each sign on one of two or three calendar dates (UTC). For example:
- Aries: 19–21 March.
- Cancer: 20–22 June.
- Libra: 22–23 September.
- Scorpio: 22–24 October.
- Capricorn: 21–22 December.
Your time zone changes the date too
The sign change happens at the same instant everywhere, but it falls on different local dates. In 2026 the Sun entered Libra at 00:05 UTC on 23 September: that was 02:05 on 23 September in Warsaw but 20:05 on 22 September in New York. A person born in New York on the evening of 22 September 2026 after 20:05 is a Libra; the same date earlier that day is Virgo.
That is why you need the year, and on a change day the time and the time zone of your birth, to be sure.
Is there a “cusp sign”?
Not in the calculation. At any moment the Sun is in exactly one sign, so everyone has a single Sun sign. Some astrologers describe people born near a change as showing traits of both neighbouring signs; that is an interpretation, not a separate sign.
What is real is the degree: someone born with the Sun at 29° of a sign is at its very end, someone at 0° at its very beginning. Our calculator shows that degree and, if a change happened within two days of your birth, exactly when.
How to check your sign
Enter your birth date in the zodiac sign calculator. If the Sun stayed in one sign all day, that is your sign whatever the time. If it changed that day, you will see both signs and the local time of the change; add your birth time and time zone to settle it. The Moon and the Rising sign have “cusps” too, and change much faster — the Big Three calculator handles those.
Astrology offers themes for reflection, not predictions or facts about who you must be.
